Assignment 5 second part

Describe the portrait of the fur merchant. Why is he "the business man'a hero"?
The portrait of the fur merchant is very classy looking. It is of a man wearing lots of brown fur. It is so much fur, that it is running down his body. Fur symbolizes luxury and wealth. He appears to have a note on one hand, as if he is handing the note to someone in front of him. He looks serious but sincere In a way. He is the business man's hero because he is the ideal person of luxury, wealth, and ambition. He seems to have confidence and respect.

What is the mood of the portrait of the 83 year old woman?
The mood of the old woman is almost sorrow written all over her face. She seems to show more negative feelings than good. Personally, I feel that she looks almost scared and vulnerable in a way, but part of me also sees her struggling through something of her own.

What is  Rembrandt community in his painting of Samson and Delilah?
Rembrandt is trying to communicate  vulnerability through his work of two people trying hard not to let go of each other, but having to do so anyway. This painting is about love and feeling inseparable including the feelings that comes with letting go of a lover or the feeling of being cheated on or not given your all.

Renaissance and Baroque Art

Renaissance and Baroque are two different types of art work made years and years ago. They are both beautiful with unique features and yet so different from one another. Baroque represents a type of art that is asymmetrical, dramatic, and includes a  high contrast of high and low. However, the renaissance is quiet the opposite. Renaissance and pre-renaissance's art was still symmetrical at some point. They focused more on shading and mimicking human figures. They didn't want the human figures to look exactly like humans. They just wanted to make sure the viewers knows its a human figure.

One art work from baroque that is interesting is Cigoli [ludovico Cardi) Italian, Castello de codi made in 1559-1613 Rome, is a piece made using oil on canvas. It is stating that it is a representating the adoration of the shepherds with saint Catherine of Alexandria. This art work has baby Christ surrounded by different people, religious figures. It was meant to represent nature. It is showing Mary holding a while Blanket, probably to cover baby Christ, as everyone was staring lovingly at the child. There is light shining from above with angelic figures flying around. Everything in this art work seems so peaceful and loving.

At the time Cigoli became one of florance best painters  in the 16th century and in this piece, he used a lot of emphasis on the color. Colors brought more warmth and nature to life. The imagine is pretty large. It is so big, that you can feel the life of the image almost. It gives a warm feeling when staring at the piece. It is also very asymmetrical with its figures.

Renaissance art was different but also very beautiful. An example of Renaissance art is Venus and Cupid, it is almost made from oil on canvas. It is a beautiful picture of cupid and his mother Venus. He is urinating through a rount little floral hole. This means fertile and loyalty of marriage. This piece represents a lot of humor and fun between mother and child. It was created by Lorenzo Lotto  in Italian, Venice ca. 1480–1556 Loreto. It relates to goddess and marriage. Venus is nude, with only a bridal cap around her hair and a shell above her hair, symbolizing fedility. She has pink rose petals all over her lap as she holds  the round leaf type item with a bell under it. She is laying on a blue blanket. Cupid has a leaf wrapped around his forehead as he smiles. The image was large and gives you goosebumps when you stand by it. Because it feels so realistic, almost like youre in that scene. This is a little different than Baroque because it is made differently. It has different colors used and it is still a tad bit symmetrical.

Birth of a Dynasty- Response

Why was the Medici family so important in the development of the Renaissance?
The Medici family was important in the development of the renaissance because they had wealth and power. This stems from their creation of the first banking system, with trading and commerce. They later on built more wealth and power through their creative art. The first unique art seen that it lived on, even after the family passed on.

Why was Donatello's David so revolutionary?
Donatello's David is so revolutionary because It was a sculpture of full nudity of a human. People of the early renaissance were not used to full nudity in Art. People were so shocked and almost upset by this sculpture, that it took so long for the sculpture to get out there and be known. It was also known that nudity was only shown in heroes, such as gods, religious figures like Adam and Eve.

 Describe this sculpture in detail.

The sculpture is of a young man holding a sword,Donatello, David, c. 1440-1460 . He is completely nude and only has a hat on his head. His hair looks quite long and wavy, it is a little above his chest. He is also wearing a metal type brace on his legs down to his feet. He looks like he is staring at something important almost. He is carved out of bronze and looks to be dark brown in color. He looks to be a human full size.

Harmon Intro Design Principles - Response

Stage III The Inhibition Experiment

An artist creates asymmetrical balance by balancing a large form by smaller forms. For example, the artist will usually make the larger form more important and attention grabbing by balancing it out with two smaller forms.  In this piece, the artist drew the heads of the human figures abnormally large. They are balanced by the smaller figures around them. Repetitive rhythm dominates the work.

Several ways used to unify an art work is through colors, lyrical patterns, and repetitive theme or rhythm.  This is done so that the unity of the art work is balanced as a whole. Bits and pieces are all brought together to make the art work a whole. In the art work above, the same colors of red, orange and yellow are repeated through the piece. Then there is a reflection of the image underneath the figures, which shows the same figures over again. It is like a reflection of you in the mirror or a river almost.

Scale is the most important decision an artist makes when planning an art work. Simply because scale gives an art work a whole new feeling and expression using scale. Scale can make the characters of the art work feel humorous, gloomy and even vulnerable. In the piece above, scale is used to make the art more humorous and fun in a way. It seems that the artists want to grab the attention of the viewer by having characters more expressive.

Egyptian, Greek and Roman style art - Assignment #2

The Egyptian, Greek, and Roman culture are three different cultures in the ancient time with their own unique style. However, they are also very similar when it comes to their art, sculptures, certain beliefs and cultures.

Artemidora is a mummy from Egypt of A.D, 90-100. It is of a young woman laying flat, dressed in a specific Egyptian style. According to the text, she was dressed in a pharaonic fashion. It included gold jewelry and a red tunic. Her hair was an Egyptian style wig, which was black as usual. The mummy sculpture seemed to have been made of stone because the ancient style of Egypt was of stone architecture at the time. At the back of this mummy's head was a support decorated with images of rebirth of life. According to the lecture of HarmonIntroEgyptionGreek , it was said that Egyptian beliefs were focused mainly on life after death. On chapter 14th, pharaohs built mountain like triangular burials, where they had buried all the bodies for the life after death passage. They were very interested in symbols of life and creating art forms and sculptures showing that as well as symbolizing it. It was shown in the video of a woman getting her hair done. The hair stylist was making her hair in arcs, which symbolized life. Arcs in the ancient Egypt meant life.  The material used in this sculpture is of stone. It was an average human size in person, almost of an average young woman of our time. The gesture of this sculpture was laying flat with wide eyes. The expression was indifferent, not that of a dead person. Which symbolizes life after death since the Egyptians believed in the Afterlife more than anything.

( Marble sphinxon a cavetto capital)

In the Greek art, it is almost similar to Egyptian but not quite. The Greek statues and art are similar to Egyptian art when it comes to the "formal pause" according to the online lecture. However, they seem to have been more focused on life and not so much of what happens after life. The spear bearer statue of Greek culture, symbolized the highest creation of nature, which was the human form. They had believed that the human form was a perfect physical form with so much power. They were obsessed with perfection, proportions and the human form. According to the text of chapter 15, the Greeks looked at being human differently. They felt that humans had the power to reason, make people important. A statue from ancient Greece called Marble sphinxon a cavetto capital. It was made in Greek, Attic, in ca. 580-575b.c. This was a grave representing male or youth. It was made out of stone just like the Egyptian art. Greek sculptors at the time learned the carving of stone from the Egyptians. This carving was a size of a toddler. It wasn't too small, but not large either. It was perfectly proportioned. It was almost a mix of human and animal. The lower body was of a lion form and upper was of human.
The Roman art is different because they are more focused on personal characteristics. In other words, they're less idealistic. However, their focus was still of a human form just like the Egyptian and Greek art. An example of roman art would be Ancient Roman allegory of Tiber River. This was of twins of Rome who were saved from the Tiber rivers. The sculpture was made of stone as well and it was very detailed. The art was of a male and a she-wolf, holding one another and the male staring at it with a drape over his body. This symbolized the male's life and relationship with the animal.
